A Guide To Backcountry Fishing

fishing-off-the-frontFor many shallow water anglers, fishing the backcountry is definitely on their list of must-do and must-repeat trips. But what is this fishing experience really all about?

What Is Backcountry Fishing?

This is a term which refers to fishing in the Florida Bay area, a peaceful, wind-free setting consisting of calm shallows and mangrove islands dotting the warm ocean.

What Fish Species Can You Fish?

These rich waters offer a great range of fish species, including permit, Jack Crevalles, barracuda, tarpon, redfish, bonefish and sea trout.

Do I Need A License?

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission requires you get a license or permit in order to fish in these waters. Children under the age of 16, Florida resident seniors over 65, the disabled and members/veterans of the Armed Forces are not required to have a recreational fishing license. You will also need a permit to fish for snook, spiny lobster and tarpon. If you are unsure about whether you require a license or permit, please contact the FFWCC here.

When Is The Best Time Of Year For Backcountry Fishing?

This will depend largely on what species you are after.

  • During the cooler months, you can expect very good fishing, with sea trout, pompano, Jack Crevalles, blue fish, snappers, ladyfish and sharks all making an appearance.
  • This is a great time of year for tarpon, with large specimens showing up in March/April. Permit will also be in the area, as will bull and lemon sharks.
  • Tarpon will still be strong this time of year and the clarity of the water makes for great sight fishing and reef fishing to change it up a bit.
  • This time of year is cooler and quieter, though the fishing is still good. With the colder temperatures, you can expect to see sea trout, sharks, barracudas, permit and Jack Crevalles, as well as snapper and pompano on the flats.
